Sri Lanka Announces 30-Day Free Tourist Visas for Citizens of 40 Countries

In a massive boost for international travelers, Sri Lanka has officially rolled out a highly anticipated move to provide free 30-day tourist visas to citizens of 40 selected countries, effective from May 25, 2026. This strategic decision is set to make traveling to the pearl of the Indian Ocean easier, more affordable, and more attractive than ever before.

According to the Department of Immigration and Emigration, this initiative aims to significantly increase tourist arrivals by removing immediate visa fees (Electronic Travel Authorization – ETA fees) and simplifying the entry process for a substantial portion of the global travel market.

A Welcoming Move to Boost Tourism

Following a record-breaking start to the year in tourist arrivals, the government and tourism authorities have implemented this visa-free program to sustain the momentum and reach the ambitious goal of 3 million tourists by the end of 2026.

By eliminating the financial hurdle of securing a short-term visa, Sri Lanka is positioning itself as a top-tier, hassle-free destination in South Asia for both holidaymakers and short-term visitors.

Key Highlights of the New Visa Policy:
  • Validity Period: The free tourist visa will be valid for a continuous period of 30 days from the date of first arrival.
  • Double-Entry: The visa permits a double-entry facility within the 30-day validity window.
  • Mandatory ETA Application: While the visa is free of charge, all eligible travelers must still apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online prior to their arrival in Sri Lanka.
  • Non-Refundable: Any ETA fees paid prior to May 25, 2026, will not be refunded.
