Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and growth, officially crossing the 900,000-visitor milestone for 2026 by the first week of May. According to the latest statistics released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the island nation welcomed a total of 922,883 international tourists between January 1st and May 10th, 2026.
This significant achievement brings renewed optimism to the industry, placing the government’s ambitious target of attracting 3 million tourists and generating $5 billion in revenue by the end of 2026 well within reach.
India, UK, and Russia Lead the Way
The influx of tourists has been heavily driven by consistent interest from traditional global markets.
- India remains the undisputed largest source market, single-handedly contributing over 208,400 visitors (accounting for roughly 23% of total arrivals) on a year-to-date basis.
- The United Kingdom ranks second with over 91,300 arrivals (10%).
- Russia follows closely in third place, bringing in over 74,600 tourists (8%) during this period.
In the first ten days of May alone, the country recorded 46,606 arrivals. While this reflects a slight seasonal slowdown typical for the start of the off-peak monsoon season—and influenced by recent global aviation disruptions—the daily average of 4,661 arrivals remains highly encouraging compared to previous years.
New Visa-Free Entry Regulations to Boost Outlook
To sustain this momentum and counter any global travel uncertainties, the Sri Lankan Parliament recently approved new regulations under the Immigration and Emigration Act on May 7, 2026. These regulations pave the way for expanded visa-free entry privileges for travelers from several key nations.
Industry analysts predict that these relaxed visa policies, coupled with aggressive promotional campaigns by Sri Lanka Tourism, will significantly boost forward bookings for the upcoming summer holidays in July and August.
What This Means for Travelers
For international visitors, the sustained popularity of Sri Lanka is a testament to its unmatched diversity. Whether it is exploring the cultural triangle, enjoying the surfing season on the East Coast (Arugam Bay), or experiencing the cool climates of the central highlands, the island continues to deliver safe, high-quality, and memorable experiences for global explorers.
