Sri Lanka Approves Rs. 131 Million to Boost Jaffna Tourism Infrastructure

In a significant move to expand Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, the Cabinet of Ministers approved, during a meeting on March 9, 2026, an estimated amount of Rs. 131.02 million to develop tourism infrastructure in the Jaffna District.

This funding for the Northern Province is part of a broader, comprehensive tourism development program planned for the period 2026–2028.

The national initiative, which includes all nine provinces, has an overall estimated budget of Rs. 2,667.03 million. The proposal was formally put forward by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, and represents a key change in promoting travel beyond the country’s traditional southern and central regions.

The newly approved Rs. 131.02 million will be used right away in 2026 to improve access and upgrade facilities at Jaffna’s unique historical sites, cultural attractions, and beautiful coastlines.

By enhancing the basic infrastructure, the government aims to support a sustainable tourism industry in the North, making it a welcoming and appealing destination for both local and international visitors.

This development plan is expected to offer new, genuine travel experiences in the Jaffna peninsula, while also creating new economic opportunities for local communities and enhancing the overall travel experience for global tourists in Sri Lanka.
