Based on information from my own experience, leading travel guides Lonely Planet and the Sri Lanka Tourism Board, here is the perfect Sri Lanka 10 Days Itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival & Relaxing start in Negombo
Rather than rushing into the bustling city of Colombo right after arriving at BIA airport, it is best to start your journey in the nearby relaxing coastal Negombo.
- Relax on the Negombo beach after a long flight
- Visit the Hamilton Canal and the famous fish market
- Exploring the 18th-century Dutch Fort
- Boating on the Dutch canal and Negombo Lagoon
Overnight stay: Negombo

Day 2: Start your journey to Cultural Triangle – Dambulla & Minneriya
- Climb the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock early in the morning for, or view it from the nearby Pidurangala Rock.
- Visit the UNESCO-listed cave Dabulla cave Temple to see centuries-old Buddha statues, murals and panoramic views of the region
- In the evening, go on a safari tour of the Minneriya National Park and see the beauty of hundreds of wild elephants in one place.
Overnight stay: Dambulla or Sigiriya

Day 3: Through Ancient and Historic Cities – Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa
It requires a very early start and efficient private transport to explore more things in those cities.
- Visit Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Jetavanaramaya, and Isurumuniya Temple to experience sacred history, iconic stupas, and ancient architectural marvels in one journey.
- Drive towards Polonnaruwa & stop for King Coconut or a traditional Rice & Curry buffet at a local roadside eatery.
- Explore Gal Vihara, Sacred Quadrangle(Dalada Maluwa), Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu, and Parakrama Samudra to experience stunning rock-carved Buddha statues, ancient royal architecture, and scenic sunset views in one day’s journey.
- For a smooth trip, hire a private driver instead of slow bus routes via Dambulla, cycle around compact Polonnaruwa, use a tuk-tuk for the more spread-out Anuradhapura, dress modestly at religious sites, and base yourself in centrally located Habarana or Sigiriya.

Day 4: Cultural Heartland – Kandy
After a peaceful night in Polonnaruwa, start your journey early in the morning to avoid traffic and make the most of the day.
- In Matale, you can visit a spices garden to learn about Sri Lankan’s famous spices and Ayurvedic plants.
- Enjoy lunch around Matale
- Arrive in Kandy around early afternoon. Start exploring with a relaxing walk around Kandy lake, enjoy the clam atmosphere
- Visit the Sacred Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most important Buddhist sites in the world.
End your day with a peaceful sunset view over Kandy city or enjoy a traditional cultural dance show if time permits.

Day 5: Little England – Nuwara Eliya
- The road to Nuwara Eliya is the one of most beautiful drives in the country, filled with mist mountains, winding roads and endless tea plantations
- Stop at Ramboda Falls and a tea plantations or factory along the way
- Start exploring the town with a visit to Gregory Lake, where you can relax, take a boat ride, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
- Then head to Victoria Park for a calm walk among beautifully maintained gardens—perfect for unwinding after the journey.

Day 6: The world’s most beautiful train ride – Ella
- Start your journey from Nanu Oya Railway Station and take the scenic train ride to Ella, Enjoying breathtaking views of tea fields, mountains, and waterfalls along the way. This is also recommended by world wide travelers as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.
- Arrive in Ella and visit the famous Nine Arches Bridge, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic photo spots.
- Then hike or relax at Little Adam’s Peak for panoramic views of the valley. After that, explore the peaceful surroundings of Ella town and enjoy lunch at a café with hill country views.
- End your day by relaxing in the cool mountain climate of Ella before your return or overnight stay.

Day 7: Wildlife spotting – Yala National Park
- Start your morning with a hike to Little Adam’s Peak, enjoying fresh air and scenic hill country views.
- Then travel towards the southern part of Sri Lanka, passing changing landscapes from mountains to dry plains.
- In the evening, go on a safari at Yala National Park, famous for having one of the highest densities of Sri Lankan leopards in the world.
- During the safari, you may also spot elephants, crocodiles, deer, and many bird species in their natural habitat.
- End your day relaxing after an adventurous wildlife experience.

Day 8: Relaxing with the blue waves – Mirissa
- Arrive at the beautiful coastal town of Mirissa and spend your day relaxing by the beach.

- Visit the famous Coconut Tree Hill, known for its stunning ocean views and photography spots.

- In the evening, enjoy fresh seafood at a beachside restaurant with a peaceful ocean view.

Day 9: History and Beaches – Galle Fort
- Start your day early with a whale watching tour in the Mirissa Sea, a popular activity in the area.
- Then travel to the historic city of Galle.
- Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Galle Fort and explore its colonial streets and unique architecture.
- Walk along the fort walls while enjoying views of the Indian Ocean.

Day 10: Colombo and return

Practical Tips for Travelers
Transportation: Since 10 days is a short period, booking a vehicle with a private driver is the best way to save time.
Best time: December to April is the best time to visit the southern coast and mountains.
